Working Together - Team Building Advice for Small Businesses

Team building is essential. A team is a group of people working with one aim, with one common goal. To achieve what the team is set out to do, it needs to function and it needs to feel committed.

If you feel that your team is not functioning as it should, and targets are not met, it is advisable to first of all make sure that the team's goals are clarified. A team has a shared responsibility, and it is up to the team manager to assure that the team is committed, to identify any issues that prevent the team from providing a quality service, and to work on removing these issues.

A team, of course, is made up of individuals. Each individual has their own personality, and personalities can clash, especially in stressful situations, for example when a deadline is approaching. This is understandable, but not very helpful for your company. And it is not always possible to predict if a new team member might clash with another team member in the future.

When time is money, spending time on team building activities can be seen by some as a waste. As a manager or small business owner, it is up to you to decide what's the best route for you and your team. Do keep in mind that when a team functions, and when there is mutual respect and understanding between the individuals, it can move mountains and achieve more.

One of the simplest ways to create a pleasant atmosphere is to encourage relationships by allowing your employees to go out to lunch together and relax outside of the work environment. This will allow your team to find common grounds and gives food for conversation. It could even be the start of lasting friendships.

Workshops are a good idea for when you sense some rising tension within your team. Led by experts, they can create mutual understanding and are a perfect way for the members of your team to express their concerns and anxieties in a friendly and neutral environment.

For the more adventurous team, there is a myriad of options available. From rafting to paintball to a survival trip, special team building days are on offer that encourage the individual members to work together in order to succeed, to increase self-esteem and to have a good laugh together, which is always helpful.

My advice is to let your team decide between the various options on offer (within your budget, of course) and to let them help with planning for the event. This gets your team involved in it all, and can increase their enthusiasm.

Keep the lines of communication open at all times and meet regularly with your employees. This will help you assess any concerns that need to be addressed, and will let your team know that you are there for them.

Don't overlook the advantages of giving rewards – not to the individual team members, as this can cause strife and envy, but to the team as a whole. Working together to earn the reward is enjoyable and will increase team spirit.

Last but not least – get to know your team. Find out a bit about their lives outside the work environment and be available to listen to their concerns. Tension caused by problems in the family, or your employee's general home environment, can affect their work and affect the way they function within the team.

Though you cannot be expected to be a counsellor, sometimes it helps if people know you will listen when it's needed, and that you respect them as a person, not just as a part of the company's machinery. If you show understanding and respect towards the people who work for you, you will find that they will respect you in return and will be happy to help you achieve your goals and targets.
