This book is a step-by-step guide for getting a successful business up and running fast. It covers all aspects of launching a business, from licenses, to bookkeeping to marketing to setting up shop. Everything is presented in a step-by-step format with checklists, worksheets, and top-notch advice from one of America’s most highly regarded business writers.

This book is for you if:
* You’re currently in the process of starting your own business and want to get things done as efficiently as possible, yet still do them right.
* You want to make certain you take care of all the details of getting a business underway, organize the process, and get some good advice.
* You’re going to start a business soon and need a plan on how to go about it.
* You have an idea for a business but don’t know where to start.
* You already run a business but would like to improve operations, marketing, and/or take care of essential aspects of growing a company.
* You’re a student in an entrepreneurship or small business class and need to launch a complete business in a limited time period.

You probably do not need this book if:
* You’ve been in business many years, and you’re not expanding or changing your business significantly.
* You’ve started many businesses successfully before and are starting another one; while this book may be a good organizing tool, it’s likely to cover information you’ve already learned from experience.
* You have no idea whatsoever of what business you want to start. If that’s the case, consider "What Business Should I Start?" also published by The Planning Shop.

This new edition of The Unofficial Guide to Starting a Small Business offers readers all the information and tools they need to successfully get their business up and running. Authoritative and comprehensive, it covers every step in the start-up process, from market research, to business plans, to marketing programs. It presents the inside scoop on all the vital topics entrepreneurs need to know–tax issues, bookkeeping, business insurance, federal and state regulations, start-up financing, and much more. Now with even more helpful checklists and illustrative examples, the Second Edition of The Unofficial Guide to Starting a Small Business is perfect for entrepreneurs with a dream–but not the MBA.

Marcia Layton Turner (Rochester, NY) is a start-up business expert and the founder of Layton & Co., a marketing consulting firm. She has been quoted or profiled in Money magazine, Entrepreneur, USA Weekend, and many other national publications.

PR pundits and business owners Friedman and Yorio tackle the fear factor of women who want to quit their day job and build a business. They ask, "Are you the girl to run the show?" They answer with a sassy list of pros and cons ("You will be able to get to your child's school play, but you will think about money all the time.") and with tough questions ("Could you negotiate a reasonable rent with an unreasonable landlord?)

Every chapter is packed with interviews, charts, quizzes and witty directives about self-employment. Among their greatest hits: what's in a name, choosing logos, ten inspiring business chick flicks, legal eagles, business speak and visibility in professional associations. Friedman and Yorio sweat the small stuff. They explain, for example, why you shouldn't eat spaghetti at a business lunch and how to ask revealing questions of a potential employee or computer consultant. The authors' premise, "let women be women" is most compelling when they explore the unique challenges women face--from finding female role models to being a boss "without being a bitch."

They are on shakier ground with the arguable assumption that all women share distinct gender styles and strengths. This type casting and the "girl friend" tone can sometimes belittle the book's smart and strategic ideas for becoming the boss. Still, it is hard to imagine a more readable, practical book about the challenges of being in charge. --Barbara Mackoff
